Service Programs

Our Mission

"To improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and around the world." Soroptimist International is an international service club whose membership is comprised of business and professional women. Program focus is "the best for women". Many of our service projects are evaluated based on this focus. Those listed below are some of the most recognizable in our community and for our membership. In addition to local service projects, SI Peterborough sponsors two annual awards, where winners at the club level are given the opportunity go on to compete at Regional and Federation levels. These awards are the Women's Opportunity Award (WOA) and the Violet Richardson Award. Please contact us for further information.

Cameron House

Cameron House is a shelter for homeless women and children run in conjunction with the Brock Mission. SI Peterborough is a committed supporter of this worthwhile and very necessary provider in our community. When the home was originally opened, SI Peterborough decorated a bedroom and we budget every year for the upkeep of this room. In 2005 we repainted the room and install carpeting on the stairs. The 2006 Saturday of Service was dedicated to thoroughly cleaning the communal kitchen and preparing a lovely meal for the residents. In addition, two new twin mattresses were donated.

In addition, we make an annual donation from the proceeds of our very successful Grocery Draw. We are grateful for the support of our local Loblaws store in this effort. In addition, members provide toiletry items for Mother's Day, non-perishable food items in February, and many of our members keep this program in mind throughout the year in other ways.

60th Anniversary Celebration

At the “Diamond are Forever” anniversary celebration , over eighty people gathered at the Holiday Inn on Sunday, October 30 to reminisce and celebrate over 60 years of service by the Soroptimist Club in Peterborough. Federal, Provincial and municipal government representatives, MP Peter Adams, MPP Jeff Leal and Councilor Shirley Eggelton all brought congratulatory greetings and shared their memories of club activities throughout the years. Highlights of the afternoon included an entertaining video presentation of club activities through the past 60 years. The introduction of Dorothy Sullivan, a charter member from the 1945 Peterborough Club was another highlight!

Finally, the draw for a beautiful diamond necklace, won by Governor–Elect of Eastern Canada Region, Margaret McRae completed the afternoon’s festivities.

"Hang Out With Us"

SI Peterborough's Environment Committee works this project to advocate, educate and encourage each of us to "hang out" our laundry instead of always using our precious electrical resources/appliances. "Hang out with Us" and help save our planet!

Women's Opportunity Award

Hilary A. Bodin is the Soroptimist WOA Award winner for 2007. It is her goal to complete her Human Services degree from Athabasca University. She is the single parent of "two great kids" who has made a lot of changes in her life over the last five years. She has strived continually to achieve her educational goals. Her reference states, "Hilary balances professionalism, compassion and humour in all that she does. She continues to plan and move forward." She deserves our award. Congratulations!

Violet Richardson Award

The recipient of this year's Violet Richardson Award, for volunteer action, is Kaitland Ridenour. Kaitland is 17 years of age and she's in Grade 12 at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Lindsay. Kaitland's volunteer initiatives are many. First and foremost Kaitland volunteers her services twice weekly to a woman who has physical challenges and she has done so for quite some time. The two have become good friends. As a result, Kaitland has designated Community Living Kawartha Lakes as the organization to be the recipient of the donation from our club. In addition, Kaitland is the leader of Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving at her school. She's the youth representative for MADD (Mothers against Drunk Drivers) for the city of Kawartha Lakes. Kaitland has also organized youth teams, at her school, for the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Through her volunteer actions, Kaitland works hard to make her community and her world a better place. We all congratulate Kaitland on her volunteering endeavours.

Trent Women Studies Award

The recipient of this year's Trent University Women's Studies Award is Anu Radha Verma. Anu was selected by her professors to receive this award. She is an outstanding student who has contributed greatly to core courses in Women's Studies. Anu is inclined to ask hard questions. This curiosity, as well as her sense of social justice, have led her to do extensive research in areas related to Feminist Critical Thought. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Anu is involved in a number of extra-curricular activities, both connected to and outside of Trent University, e.g. her creative endeavours at the Trent University Women's Centre and her participation in a creative writing group sponsored by The Toronto Women's Bookstore. We all congratulate Anu on her many academic and extra-curricular achievements.

And many more...

SI Peterborough actively supports many other organizations within our community such as the MS Society (members staff many of the selling locations during the annual Carnation sales blitz Mother's Day weekend), Casa Maria, Trent Valley Literacy, St. Joseph's at Fleming, and KAIROS, to name but a few.

Recent Events

Christmas Tea and Bazaar

A Christmas Bazaar and Tea was held at the Lion’s Centre in Peterborough on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Poinsettias, baked goods, crafts, and jewellery were sold. The tea room was ever-popular, offering wonderful sweets, cookies, and sandwiches. Thank you to all who visited, and to all club members who volunteered to make it a huge success. Together we raised over $3000.

Festival of Trees

Each year, the Peterborough Club supports the efforts of the Festival of Trees organizing committee by decorating a special Christmas tree to be auctioned at this event. Our 2007 tree was once again decorated under the creative direction of Gisela Schubert with a theme of Teddy Bears, accented with jewellery. Hundreds of visitors attend this event in November each year, to listen to live entertainment, participate in Christmas activities and wonder at the beautiful trees and decorations. Soroptimist's Golf for Health Tournament

SI Peterborough has been supporting the PRHC Foundation for several years and has donated over $40,000 to community health initiatives for women. Construction at the new hospital is now underway, and we were pleased to continue to support this project with revenues from our Annual "Golf for Health" tournament, held in June.

This tournament's success is due in large part to the support of our local business community who purchase sponsorships and donate prizes and of course to the large number of golfers who return year after year to support us. On Sept. 5th, 2007 we were able to present the Hospital foundation with a cheque for $5000. Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants!

Wed., Dec. 5, 2007 - President's Appeal

At our regular business meeting, President Marney highlighted this year’s President’s Appeal. The goal is to raise funds for women who are recovering from Fistula surgery. The appeal is in partnership with the Hamlin Fistula Relief and Aid Fund, and will raise funds to support surgical corrections of fistulae, which may occur during childbirth. Women with fistulas suffer rejection, isolation, and shame. Together, club members donated over $260 dollars to the cause. For more information on the project, check the links below:

UNICEF Collection

Each year, SI Peterborough coordinates many aspects of the local Hallowe'en UNICEF program through the schools in the local public school board, and with the "counter box" program through local businesses in the month of October. This year, UNICEF embarked on a new strategy, eliminating the collection box program in favour of the new “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” program. Children are encouraged with this new program to raise money amongst neighbours, family, and friends to purchase symbolic bricks. Participating schools keep track of money raised with posters of a school on which paper bricks with students’ names are placed. Participating students receive a bright Halloween candy bag in recognition of their efforts.

This program has been coordinated by our club for many years and is one of our most successful and worthwhile projects. In 2005, the UNICEF campaign involved 57 schools and collected over $23,000. Last year, we raised more than $25,000 under the new program with only 21 school participating. We hope this year will be the best yet.

Annual Grocery Draw

This spring we once again had a grocery draw to raise money for Cameron House, a local shelter for women and their children. Throughout April, Soroptimists could be found at various venues, including the Kawartha Home and Cottage Country Show, The Peterborough Garden Show, the Kawartha Outdoor Adventure Show, and at the Peterborough Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. The draw was held Friday, May 11, 2007, with proceeds going to Brock Mission for Women (Cameron House).
