IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruth Marion Tafts (nee Frey)

Passed away in Burlington, Ontario on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, in her 94th year. Beloved wife of the late Wilson Tafts. Loving mother of Donnie Tafts of Lacombe, Alberta and Marilyn McDermott and her husband Mark of Burlington. Dear Grandma of Christopher McDermott and Meghann and Daniel Eagle. Predeceased by her brother Edwin and survived by her brother Gordon Frey. Ruth was a graduate of the University of Toronto class of 1937 in Household Sciences and worked for many years as a registered dietitian at the Queensway General Hospital in Etobicoke. She was a longtime member of Soroptomists International and a committed community volunteer. Mom spent many happy years as an independent resident of Richview Residence in Etobicoke. Heartfelt thanks go to the excellent and amazing staff of Park Avenue Manor for their care and compassion over the last few months.

Ruth was a wonderful supporter of Soroptimists for many years assuming many leadership roles throughout her life with our club. She was loved and will be missed.

Service Programs

Armagh House

Our club supports this second stage housing project with food vouchers designated for the welcome package for each new family. We support eight families each year. We also prepared and served dinner to the residents and their children one evening. This means that the Mum's get an evening off from cooking and allows the families a chance to socialise together.

Women’s Opportunity Award

We proudly participate in this Soroptimist signature award year after year. The Women's Opportunity Award is a vital program and we present the very deserving woman with a cheque in the amount of $750.00, to use at her discression, to help keep her in her field of study.

Violet Richardson Award

The Violet Richardson Award has made us aware of the many young women in our community that work tirelessly to make the world a better place. Their energy and vision are inspiring. We are pleased to participate on an annual basis and reward a young student with a cheque for $300.00.

Soroptimist Foundation of Canada

Supporting the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada is important and allows them to give annual grants to women graduate students engaged in university studies that will enable them to help improve the lives of women in various ways.

Fundraising

Talent Challenge

Members use their many talents to raise money. We are a very resourceful group and wait eagerly to learn of the creative ways our members have of making this a successful event. Some of the unique ways our members have used their talents to raise funds are:

Jam making, hand made wreaths, knitted slippers and sweaters, painting on canvas, senior’s discount receipts, air miles points, home made greeting cards.

Card Parties

A euchre party is held each year in the party room of one member’s condominium. Guests pay a small fee for a night of euchre and fun. Snacks and drinks are provided. Prizes are plentiful and everyone takes one home. The high scorers have first choice of the prizes.

Monthly Prize Draw

Funding for various Soroptimist programs is generated at our monthly meetings. Tickets are sold and the winner keeps the prize. The funds go towards supporting our various projects and prorams.

Greeting Cards

Creating greeting cards has been a successfull means of fundraising for the club. Materials are generously donated by members, we get together at members homes for a potluck lunch and create beautiful greeting cards to sell at such events as Soroptimist Spring Conference and Soroptimist Fall Region meeting, or to anyone who wishes to purchase them. Each card is unique!

Spring Raffle

At Soroptimist Eastern Canada Spring Conference our club provides a collection of items to sell or a gift basket to be raffled. The money raised funds local projects assisting women and girls. As well, some of this money is donated to Soroptimist International’s global projects.
