Still Growing Still Serving Women

Monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the Month. September to June

Activities

At the Spring meeting in June a dinner  was held at the BollyWood  Bistro when we dined on an Indian meal. Joyce Frank was given the Ruby Award (formerly Making a Difference for Women Award) for her contributions to Guelph at the Hospice Wellington and St. George’s Church. Joyce received a plaque and a gift basket.

Elizabeth  Kent  from Wellington Victim Services  was presented with one dozen tote bags for use by the caregivers who work with victims of assault and the bereaved. The bags were donated by Winfield Marketing, a relative of Georgina Brookfield. Consequently there was no cost to the club.

A certificate was awarded to Kim Wozniak our Soroptimist of the Year for 2009. Kim was introduced to the soroptimists by her late aunt, Joan Douglas. She has been an active member for six years.

In July 2009, Five members of the club met at Montano’s Restaurant  in Woodstock, ON and  had lunch with Dina Correia, our Web master, whom some of members had never met. Dorothy Huhtalo our club buddy joined us and surprised Dina as they were both members of the Humber Credit Valley Club. Woodstock ON was a great place to meet as Dina lives in London, ON. A good time was had by all. We hope that we can make the “Lunch with Dina” an annual event.

On August 17, 2009 members of the club volunteered at the Sun Light Music Festival which was an event to support the Women In Crisis organization. We chose to sell popcorn as a fundraiser at this event. Unfortunately, despite the fact that it was a  great day weatherwise  the event was no adequately advertised and as a result attendance was poor. Needless to say our fundraising failed although those of us who volunteered had a great time.

On August 22, 2009  Georgina and daughter Samantha and Flora and grand daughter Soleil again assisted with “setting up” for the St. George’s Church Dinner for Guelph’s needy. Being Summer, the meal was a cold buffet, salads, fruit and ice cream for dessert, and tea and coffee. 148 people attended and 210 meals were served. The next St. Geroges’ Dinner will be held on November 21, 2009.

President Flora attended the Eastern Canada Region (ECR) president’s meeting which was held at the Sheridan College campus in Oakville, Ontario and was organized by Governor Maxine Tenander and the members of the ECR board.  It was attended by soroptimists from all the clubs in the region including the two newest clubs. I think that it is safe to say that everyone returned home full of enthusiasm.

Our Mission

To improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and around the world.

Soroptimist International is an international service club whose membership is comprised of business and professional women. Program focus is "the best for women". Many of our service projects are evaluated based on this focus. Those listed below are some of the most recognizable in our community and for our membership. In addition to local service projects, SI Guelph sponsors two annual awards, where winners at the club level are given the opportunity to go on to compete at Regional and Federation levels. These awards are the Women's Opportunity Award (WOA) and the Violet Richardson Award (VR). Please contact us for further information.
